China, the world’s largest carbon emitter and energy consumer, will soon be working toward a revolutionary green building overhaul. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) will issue a green building code that requires existing buildings to meet mandatory new green building standards by 2013.
The cost of meeting these new code requirements will only be about $8 per square meter, and the NDRC is also encouraging homeowners with residential property to increase their green energy efforts. Home’s located in the northern region of China will be required to update their heating systems starting in 2015.
This is a huge, world-changing event for the country with the highest pollution rates on the planet. It has also come out recently that pollution is the biggest cause for social unrest in China, so this will be a huge step in the right direction to improving the environment, economy, and overall quality of life.
